Some US East Coast cities enjoy record high temperatures for January as Boston hits 72 degrees over the weekend - while the south and Midwest are hit with snow and ice after a severe storm sweeps south-east US, killing at least 11
But over in the west of Canada, B.C. shivering under harsh winter conditions
Meanwhile fires wreak destruction on Kosciuszko National Park that could take centuries to recover from, rangers say (Kosciuszko is Australia's highest hill, and the area has a number of bothy-like shelters, it's not clear whether any of these were destroyed) and drought declared for the entirety of NSW, but at least there is some rain forecast
Elsewhere, a giant dust storm blankets parts of south-west Queensland, in WA, Anketell bushfire emergency threatens lives and homes in Perth's south near Thomas Road (but it's a tiny blaze compared with those in the south-east) and when NT rainfall records shattered across the Top End, one local community lapped it up
The hills are turning greener, with plant life expanding in the Everest region
