20th September - Today's News: Over 200 Dead in Mexico City Earthquake
Yet more devastation in the Caribbean as Hurricane Maria hits Virgin Islands and bears down on Puerto Rico
And, now downgraded to a tropical storm, Hurricane Jose brings rough surf, flooding to New Jersey shore
And a study shows that Paris climate aim 'still achievable' - albeit only if we act yesterday and do everything possible to curb CO2 emissions and continue to do so. Unfortunately, because it predicts that if "emissions peak and decline to below current levels by 2030 and continue thereafter on a much steeper decline, which would be historically unprecedented" it may result in a "peak warming of 1.2-2.0c". Thus, "limiting warming to 1.5c is not geophysically impossible", it has led to wholly false claims in the gutter press and on blogs that "climate models/predictions are wrong" ....... ironically, it's also based on a climate model! The full paper is available to read online.
Update: the Daily Fail published a horrendously inaccurate and misleading opinion piece yesterday by MP Graham Stringer. Today (21st Sept) they publish a letter from Myles Allen in response:
Graham Stringer MP misrepresents our study to claim global temperatures are not rising as fast as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climaste Change (IPCC) and suggests that action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is therefore no longer urgent.
Our study supports the IPCC's 2013 prediction that temperatures in the 2020s would be 0.9c to 1.3c above pre-industrial levels. Indeed, warming appears already to be moving into that range. Our study updated estimates of how much carbon dioxide we can still emit while expecting global temperatures to remain below the Paris Climate Agreement goal of 1.5c. To achive this goal, emission reductions would need to begin immediately and reach zero in less than 40 years time. It is not right to suggest our results reduce the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Not being as polite as Myles, I call Stringer an outright liar who has been caught deliberately misleading his constituents and is unfit for purpose. He should resign immediately! And get a job in a McDonalds - as cleaner - about the only thing he seems suited for ......
