11th June - Today's News: Nigger! Nigger! Nigger!

For an explanation of the headline, please see the last story.

Summer snow falls on summit of Snowdon - but snow can and does fall over higher summits in Britain in all months of the year. And this dusting won't have lasted long.

Some more great shots of the Chilean volcanic eruption from the Boston Globe (thanks Adam) but as ash cloud grounds more flights no word yet from Dumb and Dumber. Or maybe they're on a flight through the imaginary non existent ash cloud as we speak. I do hope so.

NASA sees heavy rainfall in Tropical Storm Sarika - which has now just made landfall in China.

Twin peaks up for sale in Austria

Arizona firefighters 'making gains' on Wallow fire

And it's nice to see Cumbrian floods rescue hero in Queen's Birthday Honours - just the sort of person for whom these are intended. 'Celebrities' and politicians take note!

Dismay for the so-called sceptics and the anti-science mob as Phil Jones declares global warming since 1995 'now significant' and they can therefore no longer misunderstand or misinterpret his comments of last year.

But we finish today on a note of anger at the lows to which racist scum will go as Dambusters dog renamed for movie remake. Nigger was also one of the codewords used during the operation to indicate sucess (hence my headline today). The fact I've known this was going to happen for years, ever since the remake was first proposed, is neither here nor there. Words are not offensive, only context. And this was a great opportunity to show kids today that Nigger has a very different meaning to the one they've been taught by racist and their apologists. I encourage everyone to boycott this movie and let all involved know why. We will not have war heros' memories sullied by ignorant bigots!!!!

(note: I do however apologise to any Germans, especially those who lost friends or relatives as a result of the Dambuster raids, for whom I accept the word Nigger may seem a little offensive)

Comments

  1. I never thought of the N word as pejorative as a child but as I grew up I did note the nasty tone to its use in the Southern States of the USA. In the UK it was always pretty neutral tending to be associated with someone from Niger or Nigeria.

The words 'Golliwog' or 'Piccanninny' held affectionate imagery for me but they seem to have been poisoned by the political propagandists.

Sad really and the same unnecessary politicisation of simple everyday words is spreading wherever some blinkered bureaucrat or activist can see an opportunity to increase control over others.

George Orwell was well aware of the process from observing the authoritarian regimes of the early 20th century. I never though it would get such a grip in democracies so it just shows that we are not immune and that we should resist.
